All of Kingsthorpe is represented by Lib Dem councillors on both Northampton Borough and Northants County Council, but there are 3 wards (county divisions) covering the area commonly described as Kingsthorpe.

Kingsthorpe ward includes Kingsthorpe village, Queens Park, Thornton Estate and Spring Park. If you live to the east of the Brampton arm of the river Nene, and to the west of Kingthorpe Grove, Kingsthorpe shopping centre and the Welford Rd, and within the boundary of Northampton Borough then you live in Kingsthorpe ward.

Kingsthorpe ward is represented by Richard Church and Sally Beardsworth on Northampton Borough Council and by Sally Beardsworth on Northamptonshire County Council.

Boughton Green ward covers all of the northern area of Kingsthorpe from the Welford Rd to Boughton Green Rd, including the Acre Lane, Whitehills and Obelisk Rise estates. Sunnyside is included in Boughton Green on the Borough Council but falls in St. Davids on the County Council. The councillors for Boughton Green are:

It also includes the University of Northampton Park Campus.
